Young Leaders, Real Impact: Mpho Nkake & Zwoluga Mutangwa Changing Futures at 21
At just 21 years old, Mpho Nkake and Zwoluga Mutangwa are proof that leadership doesn’t wait for titles, degrees, or perfect circumstances. While many their age are still figuring out their paths, these two young South Africans are already building platforms that uplift students, create jobs, and strengthen communities.
Their stories remind us that purpose is not found, it is built through action.
Mpho Nkake: Guiding Students Toward Their Dreams
It takes courage and clarity to advocate for young people while still being a student yourself. Mpho Nkake has taken on that responsibility with humility and vision, working alongside several organisations to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed academically.
He is the founder of Together We Can Succeed, an initiative dedicated to helping learners:
- Apply to higher education institutions
- Learn from the experiences of students at different universities
- Receive guidance if they are rewriting matric
- Access tutoring, now provided via WhatsApp since the Covid-19 pandemic
Rather than allowing the pandemic to disrupt learning, Mpho used technology to keep education moving forward.
Beyond his organisation, he also serves as an ambassador for Respublica Student Living and Voices Unite, and has partnered with Mkaay Beauty to help develop a skincare range. Yet education remains at the heart of everything he does.
Mpho believes senior learners deserve focused support because this stage of life is where most people:
- Discover their passions
- Shape their identities
- Begin building careers based on what they love
His mission is not only academic success, but personal confidence, helping young people feel comfortable with who they are.
For Mpho, success is not a destination but a journey, shaped by ambition and character. One of his guiding principles captures his philosophy perfectly:
“In life there are two things that define you; your patience when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything.”

Zwoluga Mutangwa: Growing Hope from the Soil
Born and raised in Tshidimbini, Limpopo, Zwoluga Mutangwa’s rural upbringing shaped his vision for the future. A committed student, he attended Wits University in Johannesburg before being financially and academically excluded, forcing him to return home.
For many, that would have been the end of the dream. For Zwoluga, it became the beginning of a new one.
Back in Limpopo, he launched Helen Frutas n Vegetal, starting with something simple: green peppers. He began supplying local outlets such as Spar, and as demand grew, so did his ambition.
With financial support from a friend, Zwoluga expanded into poultry farming, starting with 200 chickens to supply eggs to local households and vendors. His goal is not just profit, but purpose.
“I would love to employ university dropouts, drug users and ex-convicts,” he says.
“Giving them opportunities to rejuvenate their lives so they can feed their families would be my best wish for this country.”
Education remains close to his heart. In 2018, he co-authored Final Solutions, a Grade 12 mathematics guide designed specifically for rural learners. The book has since been used across provinces to support teachers and students.
By 2020, Zwoluga was working as an assistant teacher at Tshidimbini Secondary School, determined to improve learners’ understanding of mathematics and open doors to brighter futures.

Two Journeys, One Purpose
Mpho and Zwoluga took different paths: one through student advocacy, the other through agriculture and education, but their purpose is the same:
to uplift others and create opportunity where it is scarce.
They show that:
- Failure can become fuel
- Youth can lead
- Community change starts with personal responsibility
They are not waiting for perfect conditions.
They are building solutions now.
Final Thoughts
The stories of Mpho Nkake and Zwoluga Mutangwa remind us that leadership doesn’t begin with power, it begins with service.
One is helping students reach university.
The other is feeding communities and teaching maths.
Both are rewriting what success looks like at 21.
Their lives show that when young people are trusted, encouraged, and bold enough to act, they don’t just change their own futures, they change the futures of everyone around them.
And that is how real transformation begins.
