In October 2017, severe storms battered the coastline of Durban, leaving streets flooded, vehicles stranded, and residents in danger. Amid the chaos and rising waters, one man stepped forward without hesitation, and South Africa would soon know his name.

That man was Sibusiso Manduzu “Matrick” Mbhele.

A Moment of Courage During the Durban Floods

As floodwaters surged through the streets of Durban, an elderly woman found herself trapped inside her car while it was being swept away by the current. Panic set in as the water rose higher and escape seemed impossible.

Matrick Mbhele, a dedicated reefer cargo truck driver for Time Freight at the time, saw the danger unfolding. Without stopping to consider his own safety, he parked his vehicle and rushed into the raging water.

Before diving in, he reassured the terrified woman with words she would never forget:

“Mama don’t be scared, I’m a lifesaver and I’m coming to get you.”

Those words were more than comfort, they were a promise. And Matrick kept it.

A Rescue That Captured a Nation’s Heart

The dramatic rescue was caught on camera and quickly spread across social media. South Africans were moved by the image of a man risking his life to save a stranger.

The elderly woman, Janet Hart, later came forward to confirm what many already believed, that Matrick’s actions were truly heroic.

“I am the elderly lady in the car and I am eternally grateful to the gentleman who stopped his Time Freight van and rescued me. I was petrified and he assured me that he was also a lifesaver… truly my hero. Thank you.” – Janet Hart

Her son, Richard Hart, also began searching for the man who had saved his mother. The family wanted to express their gratitude properly and reward him for his bravery.

“The lady in the vehicle was my mom and we are desperately trying to find this hero to give him a reward… He performed this heroic act and then simply carried on with his job for the day. He didn’t wait around for a thanks. He just did this out of the kindness in his heart.” – Richard Hart

“I Was Just Doing What I Was Trained to Do”

When finally identified, South Africa officially met their “Durban Hero”, Sibusiso Manduzu Matrick Mbhele.

Despite the national recognition, Matrick remained humble. When asked about his actions, he simply said:

“I was just doing what I was trained to do.”

No expectation of praise. No demand for recognition. Just instinct, compassion, and courage.

His bravery earned him the title of SPAR Hero of the Week, and he received a special parcel from Good Things Guy and SPAR in recognition of his valiant efforts. More importantly, he received heartfelt thanks from the family he helped, something far more meaningful than any headline.

Final Thoughts: The Power of Ordinary Heroes

What makes this story so powerful is not just the rescue itself, but the heart behind it.

Matrick Mbhele didn’t act for attention. He didn’t wait for applause. He simply saw someone in danger and stepped in.

In a world often filled with negative headlines, stories like this remind us that heroes walk among us every day. They are truck drivers, fathers, sons, neighbors, ordinary people capable of extraordinary bravery.

Matrick Mbhele’s actions during the 2017 Durban floods inspired a nation. His courage serves as a reminder that kindness, compassion, and quick action can truly save lives.

South Africa will always remember the day a humble truck driver became a national hero.
