Set in the lush Mopani District of Limpopo Province, Tzaneen is one of South Africa’s most fertile and beautiful towns. Located in a high-rainfall region covering nearly 20,000 square kilometres, the town is surrounded by rolling plantations, misty mountains, waterfalls, and river valleys.

As Limpopo’s second-largest town after Polokwane, Tzaneen is both an agricultural powerhouse and a thriving tourism hub. Often called a “subtropical garden town,” Tzaneen’s warm climate and rich soils create a landscape that feels worlds away from South Africa’s drier interior.

History: A Town Rooted in Fertility & Trade

The name Tzaneen is believed to come from “Tsaneng,” meaning “a gathering place,” while local traditions also link it to “tana,” referring to indigenous basket-making.

Although European settlers formally established the town in 1919, the area had long been known for its fertility and strategic position along trade routes between Polokwane (Pietersburg) and Phalaborwa. The arrival of the railway further boosted growth, transforming Tzaneen into a regional centre.

The region is home to diverse cultural communities, including Northern Sotho groups such as the BaLobedu and BaNareng, as well as Tsonga communities, adding rich heritage and traditions to the area.

An Agricultural & Economic Powerhouse

Tzaneen is one of South Africa’s most important farming regions and is famous for its vast production of:

  • Avocados
  • Mangoes
  • Bananas
  • Litchis
  • Citrus fruits
  • Tea

The town is also a major timber producer, surrounded by extensive pine plantations. The discovery of minerals to the east further strengthened its role as an economic engine for Limpopo.
