These are called sunspots They look black because they are about 1,000°C cooler than the surrounding surface, though they are still incredibly hot. Sunspots form when powerful changes in the Sun’s magnetic field reduce heat in certain areas Some sunspot groups can grow ten times larger than Earth, and their intense activity can send out radiation that interferes with radio, satellite, and communication signals on our planet They may look small from Earth, but sunspots are giant, magnetic storms raging on the Sun’s surface
