Tucked away at the foot of the majestic Winterberg Mountains, the highest peaks in the Amatola Range, the small town of Adelaide is one of the Eastern Cape’s most quietly captivating destinations. Surrounded by rolling farmland, misty mountains, and forested valleys, Adelaide sits at a historic crossroads shaped by the meeting of South Africa’s three main cultural groups.

Rich in frontier history, agricultural tradition, and natural beauty, Adelaide offers visitors a warm rural welcome and an ideal base for exploring the greater Amatola region.

History: A Frontier Town with Deep Roots

Adelaide began life as a British military outpost known as Fort Adelaide, established around 1834–1835 by Captain Alexander Boswell Armstrong to protect the frontier during the Cape–Xhosa conflicts. The fort was named after Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV.

Long before colonial settlement, the land was home to the San people, whose presence is still reflected in nearby rock art sites. The arrival of the 1820 Settlers, along with Scottish and Afrikaans farming families, shaped the town’s development into a thriving agricultural settlement.

Over time, Adelaide grew from a frontier fort into a farming town renowned for sheep and wool production, a legacy that continues today. Adelaide is also known for its exceptional venison produced through a specialised local abattoir, as well as its thriving citrus and beef farming. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with rich abundant birdlife.

The town’s vibrant communities of Bezuidenhoutville and Lingelethu add cultural depth, offering visitors opportunities to engage with local life, traditions, and hospitality.
