The bay was named after Admiral Sir Frederick William Richards, who was stationed in the area at the time.

For decades, the area remained relatively quiet, used mainly for fishing and shelter, until industrial development reshaped its future.

Richards Bay’s transformation began in earnest in the early 1970s, when South Africa approved the development of a deep-water port to export coal from the country’s interior.
