Set along the warm shores of KwaZulu-Natal, Richards Bay is a dynamic coastal city where powerful industry meets unspoilt natural beauty. Built around a vast 30 square kilometre lagoon formed by the Mhlatuze River, the city is best known for its deep-water port, the largest in South Africa by volume. Yet beyond cranes and cargo ships lies a destination rich in wetlands, wildlife, beaches, and access to the cultural heart of Zululand.

History: From Quiet Lagoon to Strategic Harbour

Originally, the name Richards Bay referred simply to a large, shallow coastal lagoon. Its strategic importance became clear during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, when the British established a temporary harbour here. The bay was named after Admiral Sir Frederick William Richards, who was stationed in the area at the time.

For decades, the area remained relatively quiet, used mainly for fishing and shelter, until industrial development reshaped its future.

The Industrial Boom of the 1970s

Richards Bay’s transformation began in earnest in the early 1970s, when South Africa approved the development of a deep-water port to export coal from the country’s interior.

  • 1972 – Parliament approved the harbour project
  • 1976 – The first phase of the port officially opened

The harbour rapidly grew into one of the world’s largest coal export terminals, placing Richards Bay firmly on the global industrial map. Alongside this growth, a modern town developed—carefully balancing heavy industry with conservation areas, residential zones, and tourism infrastructure.
