Natural Remedies for Side Stitches: Causes, Treatment & Prevention

Side stitches, often described as a sharp, stabbing pain on the side of the abdomen, are a common and uncomfortable experience for many runners and active individuals.  The pain typically worsens with each breath, and although it appears more frequently on the right side, it can also affect the left side of the body.

Doctors refer to side stitches as exercise-related transient abdominal pain (ETAP).  While they can be intense enough to stop you in your tracks, the good news is that side stitches are not harmful and typically don’t require medical attention.

What Causes Side Stitches?

Stitches may result from spontaneous cramping or spasm of the diaphragm, the large muscle beneath the lungs that is responsible for breathing.  Several factors can make you more likely to experience this pain:

1. Age

Younger people seem more susceptible—possibly due to higher activity levels—though the evidence is not entirely conclusive.

2. Poor Posture

People with postural issues, especially kyphosis (rounded upper back), may experience side stitches more often. Good posture helps support the diaphragm during exercise.

3. Exercise Intensity

Research is mixed:

  • Some studies suggest high-intensity workouts may trigger side stitches.
  • Other research suggests the opposite.
Even well-trained athletes report occasional side aches.

4. Eating and Drinking Before Exercise

Eating too soon before a workout may contribute to side stitches.  There is some evidence showing that carbohydrate-rich drinks before or during exercise may increase the likelihood of pain.

5. Temperature & Warmups

Cold weather and inadequate warmups are often reported anecdotally as triggers, although research is limited.

6. Muscle Cramping

While commonly believed to be a form of cramp, current studies do not show significant changes in muscle electrical activity during a side stitch.

Natural Remedies & Treatments for Side Stitches

If a side stitch hits mid-workout, here are simple, natural ways to ease the pain:

1. Practice Deep Belly Breathing

Try deep, controlled breaths that expand both the belly and chest.  This helps relax the diaphragm and reduce pain.

2. Don’t Push Through the Pain

Running through a side stitch often makes it worse.
Stop, walk, or stand still, and focus on slow, deep breaths until the pain subsides.

3. The Push-and-Blow Method

This popular remedy works for many people:

  • Press your fingers gently but firmly under your rib cage on the painful side.
  • Purse your lips and blow out hard.
This combination often interrupts the spasm in the diaphragm.

4. Stretch to Release the Cramp

Try bending forward, or stretch the affected side by raising your arm overhead and leaning away from the pain. This can help relax the tightened muscles.

How to Prevent Side Stitches Naturally

Want to avoid the problem altogether? These simple, natural strategies can help:

  • Avoid eating 2–3 hours before exercise
  • Sip fluids, don’t gulp them—especially during intense activity
  • Avoid sugary or carbohydrate-heavy drinks during workouts

  • Strengthen your core to improve overall stability
  • Improve posture for better breathing and diaphragm support

  • Stay active regularly—better conditioning may reduce frequency

Final Thoughts

Side stitches are annoying, painful, and can derail even the best workout.  They may begin as a dull ache before escalating to a sharp, stabbing pain that forces you to stop.

The cause isn’t fully understood, and many treatments are based on experience rather than scientific certainty, but the good news is:

Side stitches are not dangerous
They usually go away quickly
Natural remedies often provide fast relief

Important Note:  Never try to run through pain of any type of muscle cramp in the arms, legs or torso. Stop whatever you're doing to give the muscle a chance to recover
