Hidden in a peaceful valley of South Africa’s Overberg region, Baardskeerdersbos, affectionately known as “Bbos”, is a charming rural village known for its vibrant art scene, welcoming community spirit, and rustic countryside beauty.

Located about 20 km east of Gansbaai on the Gansbaai–Elim–Bredasdorp road, this small settlement lies on the southern slopes of Perdekop (Horse Hill) at the entrance of Boskloof (Forest Gorge), where a gentle mountain stream flows into the Boesmansrivier.

With its scenic farmland, mountain views, and nearby ocean, Baardskeerdersbos offers a peaceful escape where creativity, nature, and community life come together.

History: A Quiet Village with Deep Roots

The earliest European record of the area dates back to 1660, when Jan van Riebeeck sent an expedition to explore the Overberg. The farm “Baarscheerders Bosch” was officially surveyed in 1831 for Phillip Fourie Senior, encompassing the village and surrounding farmland.

Over time, the original farm was subdivided into smaller farms, smallholdings, and village plots. Despite these changes, Baardskeerdersbos remained largely untouched for decades, maintaining its rural character.

One of the village’s most notable landmarks is its historic church built in 1921, now recognized as a National Monument.
