The Bible records the family line from Shem to Abram in the book of Genesis following the flood. This record begins after Noah blesses his son Shem.

Scripture states:

“He also said, ‘Blessed by the Lord my God be Shem; and let Canaan be his slave.’”(Genesis 9:26, NRSV)

After the flood, the Bible narrows its focus to Shem’s descendants.

"These are the descendants of Shem. When Shem was one hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood;" (Genesis 11:10, NRSV)

"and Shem lived after the birth of Arpachshad for five hundred years, and had other sons and daughters."(Genesis 11:11, NRSV)

Arpachshad is identified as the next generation.

"When Arpachshad had lived for thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah;"(Genesis 11:12, NRSV)

"and Arpachshad lived after the birth of Shelah for four hundred and three years, and had other sons and daughters."(Genesis 11:13, NRSV)

Shelah follows in the recorded lineage.

"When Shelah had lived for thirty years, he became the father of Eber;" (Genesis 11:14, NRSV)

"and Shelah lived after the birth of Eber for four hundred and three years, and had other sons and daughters."(Genesis 11:15, NRSV)

Eber is then named.

"When Eber had lived for thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg;"(Genesis 11:16, NRSV)

"and Eber lived after the birth of Peleg for four hundred and thirty years, and had other sons and daughters."(Genesis 11:17, NRSV)

The genealogy continues through Peleg.

“When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu.” (Genesis 11:18, NRSV)

“Peleg lived two hundred nine years after the birth of Reu, and had other sons and daughters.” (Genesis 11:19, NRSV)

Reu is listed next.

“When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug.” (Genesis 11:20, NRSV)

“Reu lived two hundred seven years after the birth of Serug, and had other sons and daughters.” (Genesis 11:21, NRSV)

Serug is named as the father of Nahor.

“When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor.” (Genesis 11:22, NRSV)

“Serug lived two hundred years after the birth of Nahor, and had other sons and daughters.” (Genesis 11:23, NRSV)

Nahor then becomes the father of Terah.

“When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah.” (Genesis 11:24, NRSV)

“Nahor lived one hundred nineteen years after the birth of Terah, and had other sons and daughters.” (Genesis 11:25, NRSV)

Terah is identified as the father of Abram.

“When Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.” (Genesis 11:26, NRSV)

The Bible then names Abram among Terah’s descendants.

"Now these are the descendants of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot."(Genesis 11:27, NRSV)
